How to wash curtains the easy way
This entry was posted 27/03/2019
Are your curtains looking grubby? Many people go for years without cleaning them, but over the years, curtains can collect a phenomenal amount of dust and dirt. Keep them looking fresh and bright by washing your curtains regularly – find out how in our step-by-step guide.
Always check the label
Not all curtains are the same - some are delicate lace, while others are made of sturdier stuff. The fabric and its particular characteristics will determine how you wash your curtains. Many curtains are made from materials that cannot be machine washed; if they are made from velvet or are lined, they may need to be professionally dry cleaned, or otherwise they might need to be hand washed. Those that can be washed in a washing machine will usually need to go in on a delicate's cycle. Do make sure you check the label carefully, or you risk damaging your curtain fabric through shrinking, snagging or discolouration.
Before you start
Take down your curtains and remove all hooks and other accessories. If they’re really dusty, you can shake or beat them, or give them a once-over with a vacuum cleaner.
Before washing curtains, soak them in cold water (if the label allows). This helps to loosen any dust or dirt.
Wash with care
If you are hand washing your curtains, use cool water and a mild detergent, and make sure this is fully dissolved before immersing the fabric. Swirl the curtains in the soapy solution for ten minutes or so before draining and rinsing until the soap bubbles have disappeared. There’s no need to scrub or wring out the fabric, which is likely to cause creases.
For net curtains and other delicate fabrics that are going in the machine, it’s a good idea to use a laundry bag or pillowcase to ensure that they don’t snag inside the drum.
How to dry your curtains
If you can, air dry your curtains on a washing line. This can take a long time if they are made of a heavy fabric, so choose a sunny, breezy day if you can. Some curtains can be tumble dried, but do check the label before attempting this, and always choose a low heat, gentle cycle.
Iron out any wrinkles
After hanging your curtains out to dry, iron them to restore a smooth, flat and unwrinkled look. Then it’s time to re-hang them in your window! Take the opportunity to give your curtain pole, track or other fixtures a thorough clean to remove all dust.
Can you wash curtains without taking them down?
Curtain washing isn’t a weekly activity – you’ll probably only do it once or twice a year during a deep clean. In between washes, it’s certainly possible to keep your curtains looking good by using the appropriate attachments on your vacuum cleaner to get rid of dust. For fabrics that cannot be washed, you can also use the upholstery attachment on your steam cleaner to revitalise your curtains, without needing to take them down off the track or pole.
