How To Dress Difficult Windows

Different shaped windows can create a stunning focal point in any room, while allowing in that all important natural light. However, the shape of some windows can make them very difficult to dress. Take a look at our top tips on how to dress an awkward window.

Arched Windows

Often a feature point in the room, a made-to-measure track bent to the shape of the arch allows you to dress your arched window beautifully. Curtains can be fitted with a brake, so you can draw them closed and open them off the window.

A Roman blind can be made to the shape of the window. The top of the blind is stationary but operates like a normal Roman blind from below the arch.

Dormer Windows

These windows can be tricky due to limited or no space to stack the curtains. However, a made-to-measure track or pole can be bent at 90o so that the curtains come off the window and dress back on the sides.  Dormer rods are fitted to the side walls on a hinge, keeping the curtains off the window when open and off the sides when closed.

Suntrap Windows

These Art Deco suntraps are stunning and let in a great deal of light, but the curvature means they are not easy to dress. A made-to-measure track bent to the same radius as the window will follow the lines beautifully and emphasises the shape and style of the window.

Alternatively, a made-to-measure pole follows the radius of the window but allows a more decorative option than the track.

Wall of windows

A stunning feature, but a lot of glass to cover! Treat each window as an individual window, dressing them separately. Although this will look great, it can take up space and block some light. Blinds on the other hand need less space, so can be effective when there is only a small section of wall between each window.

Apex Windows

Our preference is to curtain apex windows to add softness. Silent Gliss corded tracks control the drape and gather of curtains at a 45-degree angle, or uncorded curtain tracks with a brake are an alternative.  If you only want to dress, two uncorded tracks fitted to meet at the top of the window allow this. Alternatively, a track can be bent on the apex.

Vertical blinds are very effective as they can remain shut and just turn to let in light. Soften them with wave-effect verticals from Silent Gliss, stylishly designed to shape the louvres and reduce the angular effect.

Sky Lights

Ideal for filling a room with light, but during the summer months they can make rooms very hot if they are not dressed. Being high up, the sky light windows can also be hard to open and close, making electric blinds a great option for Skylight blinds. They are practical, and some can be fitted with light sensors to close if the sun gets too bright.

Crank operated blinds are just as suitable but less extravagant option. These could be Roller or Roman blinds and can be operated by standing underneath the skylight and attaching a crank handle that when twisted opens or closes the blinds.

Bi-Fold Doors

This wall of glass brings the outside in and can open up a house with a tremendous effect, but only certain products can be made to fit their longer lengths. Wave curtains look fantastic and take the least stacking space. They can be fitted onto electric tracks, Silent Gliss Metropoles or even a recess track which fits into the ceiling, so the track is hidden – minimal, stylish and a great finished effect.

Roller blinds, particularly electric roller blinds are great for bi-fold doors. Several blinds can be opened or closed at the touch of a button and can be linked into home-automation and set up with timers and remote controls.
