How to Get Natural Light into a Dark Room
This entry was posted 28/05/2019
With summer just around the corner, now is the time to ensure that your home is geared up for the warm weather and long days. If you’re looking to breathe a new lease of life into your décor over the next few months, it’s important to allow as much natural light as possible to fill your home.
There are a number of added health benefits that come with an increase in natural light, such as:
- Releasing endorphins
- Reducing condensation and damp
- Improving sleep
- Improving productivity
As well as the above, filling your room with natural light can make it feel larger and more spacious, fresh and airy.
Here are five great ways to enhance the natural light in your home;
Mirrors
Placing mirrors around your home can create the illusion of a larger room by reflecting the existing light coming in and making the space appear brighter, especially on a sunny day. Hanging your mirror directly opposite a large window will emphasise the light and radiate the room all year round, regardless of the season.
Curtains or Blinds
There are many options available when it comes to choosing curtains or blinds for a room. However, the type of material and colour that you go for can affect the amount of light let in. Dark, heavy curtains will end up absorbing the light and blocking out the longed-for sun rays. Opting for a lighter colour such as white, cream or other neutrals will brighten a room on its own as well as allowing the sun to pour through.
Another great option, giving you more control over your lighting situation, is to invest in a custom-made electric blind. This enables you to adjust the amount of light being let in, depending on the time of day or desired ambience. Also, having the ability to set a time for your blinds to automatically open and close, means that you can wake up to natural light as well as not having to remember to close them at night.
Curtain Holdbacks
Stylish and practical, curtain holdbacks allow you to fully pull back your curtains and let as much natural light flood in as possible, especially during the warmer months. Available in wooden finishes as well as brushed silver or burnished brass, this elegant feature will add the finishing touch to your home interior.
Colours
Colour choice is crucial when considering the light coming into a room. Naturally, dark colours will make a room feel more enclosed. This can work as a dramatic feature in a large, well-lit room but will often make a room appear significantly smaller.
Light, neutral colours will alternatively open up a space and make the room feel fresh and bright. To accentuate this, why not try adding metallic pieces around your home, creating highlights throughout?
Interior
Reflective décor will create another opportunity for natural light to subtly bounce around the room. Furnishings such as a mirrored coffee table, a glossy granite worktop or a pastel rug will all compliment the new ambient radiance of your home. Not forgetting the floor and ceiling, a lick of white paint on these surfaces will bring out the natural light in the room even more.
